FAQ's

Can any Southern-NH high school or middle school student join Central Crew Club?
  • Yes, we're a Club affiliated with Manchester Central High School but we have students from numerous area middle and high schools rowing currently; Central, Trinity, Pinkerton, Bow, Concord, Londonderry, Hillside, Cawley, Home School
  • The majority of our team is made up of high school students but we have a group of middle school students and welcome more if interested in joining. Currently we have Manchester, Hooksett, Concord and Bow middle school students participating. By joining early the middle school age students get a head start on developing their rowing skills and 'seating' in a boat at their appropriate skill level. Middle School age athletes are responsible for getting rides to/from practice.

Are Central Crew coaches professionally trained/certified?
  • Yes; our coaches are certified US Rowing-Level 2 and have valid CPR/First Aid training & NH Boating Licenses
  • Our Coaches also pass an MSD background check

When do you row, Spring or Fall?
  • Crew is one of the few sports with (2) distinct official seasons; most of our team row both seasons, some do other sports so they split their seasons, which is also a great way to cross-train and get super fit!
         - Spring Season - "Sprint" style races generally shorter (1.5-2K) in distance and held duiring the Spring rowing season
         - Fall Season - "Head" style or time-trial races, these are generally longer races of 4K-6K for High School races

Is Crew expensive?
  • Yes, the boats/shells, insurance, trailers, coaches and other resources all add up to significant costs. However we constantly fund raise, source donations from area businesses and try to offer scholarship where warranted/needed!
  • Our program is one of the least expensive per season by design and we strive to make rowing as affordable and attainable for as many students from as many schools/towns as possible.
  • We also offer scholarships (partial, whole, and payment plans) as needed and as available to ensure equal access.

If there are no changes, why do we have to fill out new forms for each season?
  • The Central Crew Coaches & Board can't track whether there's been changes in contact info, medications/allergies, etc. so it's just easier if we source new sets of the Registration Forms for each season.
  • Plus there is a requirement for updated seasonal information for MSD and insurance purposes.

Why a Swim Test?
  • ALL new Novice or transfer athletes are required to provide documented proof of swim test / water tread proficiency or take the Central Crew swim test administered by a certified swim instructor/life guard by Central Crew.
  • This is a liability necessity and tool to ensure the Coaches can ensure the athletes have basic swimming/water treading capabilities.
  • Central Crew will organize & facilitate a swim test as needed with a certified lifeguard/swim instructor. this is critical for safety and liability purposes.

Payment Options?
  • We prefer checks, as we don't need to pay any fees.
  • Checks should be made out to Central Crew Club & please note season & rower name(s) on checks for tracking.
  • We can take credit cards if absolutely necessary, but we pay a user fee and % purchase charge!

Scholarship?
  • Central Crew does have limited scholarships and payment plan options based on club funds available.
  • A 3-person Board Scholarship Committee confidentially reviews requests and determines scholarship grants/payment plans on a case-by-case basis.
  • You can download the Scholarship request form in document tab and email to our Registrar.

Why US Rowing Membership?
  • US Rowing is a nonprofit membership organization recognized by the US Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States. With more than 1,350 rowing organizations and 83,000 individual members, US Rowing serves and promotes the sport on all levels of competition.
  • Basic Membership is actually free, however US rowing charges a $9.75 Admin. Fee annually.
  • Basic Membership allows athletes to compete in US Rowing sanctioned regattas only and includes general liability only insurance coverage

I see there's a $45 US Rowing Championship Membership option; what does this include?
  • The Championship Membership is $45/yr. and allows rowers to compete in US Rowing Hosted AND Sanctioned regattas! Insurance coverage includes general liability AND excess medical coverage when they row. A monthly newsletter and complimentary subscription to ROWING Magazine. Rowers are allowed to row as 'unaffiliated'.

What do these terms mean? (Terminology 'speed round' with source credit due to Wikipedia and US Rowing)
  • Shell - Race Boat (called shells in US)
  • Coxswain or 'Cox' - Oar-less crew member who usually sits in stern or lies in bow & steers + calls out commands
         - Coxswains are typically small in stature but confident and natural leaders as they're actually the 'boss' of the boat!
         - Coxswains are not necessarily the most physically athletic but an integral part of the boat crew by steering & calling
out commands & keeping rowers focused. We've had numerous Central Coxswains go on to Cox in college!
  • Sweep - In a sweep boat, each rower has only 1 oar in the shell
        - Eight (8+) - A shell with 8x rowers using 1 oar each and always with a coxswain
        - Four (4- Coxless / 4+ with Cox) - A shell with 4x rowers using 1 oar each
        - Pair (2) - A shell with 2x rowers each using 1 oar each
  • Sculling - In a sculling boat, each rower has 2 oars or 'sculls'; one on each side of the boat shell
       - Eight (8x) - A shell with 8x rowers using 2 oars each
       - Quad (4x) - A shell with 4x rowers using 2 oars each (Can be coxed 4x+ or generally coxless 4x-)
       - Double (2x) - A shell for 2x scullers using 2 oars each
       - Single (1x) - A shell designed for a single sculler

Who do we make the check out to for Crew season fees?
  • Please make checks payable to Central Crew Club (in note section, include child's name & season (e.g. Spring 2020)

Do the crew team members need uniforms (uni's)? (If yes, do we pay for these?)
  • Yes;
        - For Novices (new rowers), they will purchase & wear racing & a Crew Team T-Shirt
        - Varsity Boat Crews will need to purchase a Men's or Women's Uni's (short for Unisuits) which are one-piece suits
        - We have a full line of apparel including shirts, hats (ball + wool), Uni's, sweat pants, fleece & sweatshirt pullovers
along with Central Crew 'Splash Jackets' (See our Apparel page for images and examples)
